The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine offers a variety of online courses intended to complement a student’s veterinary curriculum.

Course Delivery

The courses are online, self-paced and asynchronous, so students may start and stop a course at any time. For faculty, they can also be used as material for a “flipped classroom”, where students view online materials outside class to prepare for in-class activities facilitated by local faculty. Students have 150 days (about 5 months) to complete the course. Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a certificate of completion.  

Biology of Veterinary Pathogens

The course includes an overview of relevant veterinary microbiology and the interaction between microbes and their hosts. The course will build upon relevant physiology pertaining to disease prevalence, prevention, and pathology will be discussed. The host immune system will be highlighted, and important bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites will be studied. Current and emerging pathogens and the relevance of potential zoonotic spillovers into human populations will be discussion points. Students will have foundational knowledge in anatomy and physiology reinforced, with an introduction to case-based thinking. This will be applicable when assessing health at the individual or systems level.

Clinical Small Animal Dentistry

This course is an intensive study of modern dentistry techniques for dogs and cats. Each module highlights clinically relevant dental and paradental anatomy in the recognition and treatment of dental disease. Dental pathology, radiology, extraction technique, and periodontal disease are applied in a clinical model. 

Credit Hours: 2 Hours
Time Expectation: Approximately 48 Hours

Veterinary Imaging Anatomy

The basic principles behind imaging modalities, image acquisition, and radiation safety are covered to encourage learners to consider how tissue structure and function apply to anatomy and the interpretation of diagnostic images. Students will also learn to identify the normal radiographic anatomy of common domestic species. 

Credit Hours: 1 Hour
Time Expectation: Approximately 14-16 Hours

Interpretation of Laboratory Data

The objective of this course is to help students learn to interpret clinical pathology data as it applies to actual cases. Students are required to critically evaluate clinical case data, and write a summary of the case to include a description of abnormalities and pathophysiology causing the changes, differential diagnoses, and additional testing. 

Credit Hours: 1 Hour
Time Expectation: Approximately 15-20 Hours

Veterinary Form and Function

The course includes necessary information from the major body systems (cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal, nervous, and reproductive, etc.). Students will gain foundational knowledge in anatomy and physiology, with an introduction to case-based thinking and the fundamentals of the application, when assessing clinical or herd health problems at the systems level.

Credit Hours: 3 Hours
Time Expectation: Approximately 48 Hours

Clinical Diagnostic Imaging

This course is heavily case-based, similar to a face-to-face clinical rotation and uses over 40 imaging cases selected by board-certified radiologists. The important fundamentals of radiography are reviewed, including the principles behind imaging modalities, high-quality image acquisition, and radiation safety.

Time Expectation: Approximately 32 Hours
